James River Day School is an independent, non-sectarian, coeducational, Kindergarten through eighth grade day school in Lynchburg, Virginia, founded in 1971. When the school needed expanded and improved space for the upper school, as well as the adding science facilities for the lower school, Architectural Partners was asked to design a new addition wing to provide accommodations for the growing curriculum, but still be cohesive with the rest of the facilities. Completed in August 2017, this two-story 6,600 square foot addition provides four additional classrooms: two science labs on the second floor, with a shared teacher office space and lab support in between the classrooms, and two English classrooms on the first floor. Also included are additional administrative offices, meeting and collaboration spaces, and spacious hallways. A centrally located elevator and interior stairwell helps to improve circulation and allow for greater accessibility throughout the entire school.
The new addition required a portion of the land already occupied by the existing all-school playground. However as part of the project, the design team improved a portion of the existing playground for use by the lower school and relocated and expanded the upper school playground. The new playground has a new basketball full court, several play structures, a two story hill-side slide, and a new exterior coliseum.
