An initial evaluation of Botetourt County’s main administrative facility – a 16,000 square foot two-story building built in the 1980s that housed thirteen County departments – resulted in short, mid, and long-term expansion and re-organization needs being identified. Virginia Western Community College’s Workforce Training Center also shared space in the building, with their classroom component occupying needed county expansion space. The identified solution to meet the most immediate needs of both entities was to provide an addition to house VWCC Workforce Training Center classroom and administrative space.
The resulting 8,900 square foot addition provides new administrative offices, meeting space, and three classrooms for the Welding and HVAC Technology programs. Adjacent teaching labs in the existing facility for these two high-demand courses were also renovated for improved and expanded teaching conditions. The addition’s materiality, massing, and detailing emulates the existing administration building’s aesthetic for the campus. An accelerated design schedule allowed for bidding and construction to yield occupancy of the addition and teaching labs for the important Fall course year start.
